
Life-threatening injuries caused by Dryden house fire
A resident was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after Fire Services responded to a house fire in Dryden.
On Wednesday morning at around 12:15, firefighters were dispatched to a residence on Government Street after a fire broke out on the building’s second story. Dryden Fire Services had also received reports that a resident was still inside the inflamed building.
The first-arriving crews were able to quickly knock down the fire and locate the resident. However, the resident had sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Dryden Regional Health Centre via EMS.
The scene was cleared at around 3:08 after a total of 24 firefighters responded with eight apparatus. No other injuries have been reported.
Investigations into the incident have been requested to the Office of the Fire Marshal.

Red Lake youth faces weapon charges
A 17-year-old was arrested Monday evening after Red Lake OPP received a report of a threat with a weapon.
The youth was picked up at a residence where the threat was received, and was found to be in possession of an axe and another edged weapon.
The accused, whose name cannot be disclosed under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and two counts of uttering death threats.

Aggravated assault charges laid after 2-year investigation
After a 2-year-long investigation, a 53-year-old woman faces a number of charges, including aggravated assault, in relations to injuries suffered by a five-year-old child.
The case began back in November 2021, where the OPP and Treaty #3 Police were investigating a serious assault in Wabaseemoong Independant Nations.
On Friday, charges were laid against the aforementioned suspect, which includes failing to provide necessaries of life, abandoning a child and criminal negligence causing bodily harm. She is set to appear in Kenora Court on November 23rd.
The suspect was an employee of Wabaseemong Child and Family Services at the time.

Investigation of suspicious Pikangikum death underway
Police are investigating a ‘suspicious’ death in Pikangikum First Nation.
On Monday, OPP, Pikangikum Peavekeepers and Pikangikum Police all responded to a call from a residence on Fishhouse Road where they discovered an individual who would be taken to the nursing station and later pronounced dead.
An autopsy will be taken place in Toronto at a later date to confirm the deceased’s identity and cause of death. So far, no further details have been publicly released, though investigation continues with involvement from Pikangikum Police, OPP and forensic identification services.
Investigators do no believe there is imminent threat to public safety.

Three people escape plane crash in Stratton
Three people managed to avoid serious injury after a plane crashed in a Stratton field, west of Fort Frances.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada says the Cessna 172 collided with a power line before impacting the ground. The plane sustained substantial damage.
The plane was registered to the Manitoba-based airliner, Harv’s Air, and was on a rental flight to an unregistered landing site.
Information about the collision continues to be collected.

Collision on Highway 11/17 leaves two dead
A highway collision near Shabaqua, west of Thunder Bay, involving two tractor-trailer units has left two dead and two injured.
Ontario Provincial Police say the accident occurred around 3:30 am on Sunday near Finmark Road. The result of the crash led to the closure of the highway until late Sunday evening, where traffic was backed up for a great distance.
The identities of the deceased have not been released, nor any details on the conditions of the two who were injured and taken to hospital.

Stolen vehicle recovered in Ignace
A 38-year-old man is facing charges after stealing a vehicle in Ignace.
On September 8th at approximately 2:45am, members of the Ignace OPP responded to a reported theft of a vehicle from the front of a local hotel.
The vehicle was later found abandoned, and officers recovered the keys shortly after. Investigations led to the arrest of a 38-year-old man, who now faces charges of Theft of Motor Vehicle, Driving while under suspension, and Failure to comply with release order.
The accused has been remanded into custody and will appear in Kenora District Bail Court on Friday.

Driver blames Tesla vehicle’s autonomous mode for speeding
Thunder Bay OPP got to hear a new excuse for speeding after pulling over a driver last week.
A Toronto man was pulled over on Highway 11/17 after a patrol car’s radar clocked his car going at 125 km/h in a 90 zone.
The driver then blamed the vehicle being in “autonomous mode” for why it was speeding.
The driver was charged nonetheless.

Three injured after serious Highway 17 collision
Three people were transferred to Lake of the Woods hospital after a serious collision on Highway 17 near Whitehead Road.
Shortly after midnight, Kenora OPP, Emergency Medical Services, and Kenora Fire and Safety services responded to reports of the head-on collision involving two vehicles.
The drivers of both vehicles as well as a passenger were transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Investigation has led to one of the drivers, a 61-year-old man from Kenora, being charged with careless driving causing bodily harm, in addition to a 3-day license suspension after the drivier blew an alert on a screening device.
The highway was shut down briefly during the investigation but has since been re-opened.

One death confirmed in Highway 671 collision
One person has been pronounced deceased after a single-vehicle collision on Highway 671 to Grassy Narrows, about 12 kilometers north of the Kenora by-pass.
According to OPP, the incident happened at around 5:30 AM. The driver was taken to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital, but was later pronounced dead.
The passenger of the vehicle was also taken to hospital, suffering minor injuries.
The Traffic Incident Managemnt and Enforcement Team and Re-Constructionists are looking into the cause of the crash, and the area is reduced to one-lane traffic while investigations are underway.
